Hair! Your Plants Will Love It.

Hair: The Secret Ingredient Your Plants Will Love.

Let me ask you something: Have you ever thought about where all the hair from salons goes? It’s a question I never really considered—until I found myself sweeping up mountains of it every day as a hairdresser.

At the time, it seemed like just another chore. Hair would go into the bin, off to the landfill, and that was the end of the story. But something about that didn’t sit right with me. Hair is part of us—it’s full of nutrients and strength—so why were we treating it like waste?

That little spark of curiosity turned into years of research, trials, and discoveries and eventually Soilz Alive.  What I found was incredible: hair has so much more to offer, especially when it comes to plants and soil.

Why Is Hair So Good for Plants?

I’ll admit it—it took me a while to wrap my head around the idea of hair being useful in the garden. But the more I learned, the more it made sense. Here’s why:

  • It’s a Slow-Release Nutrient Powerhouse
Hair is full of nitrogen, which plants absolutely love. It’s the nutrient responsible for lush, green leaves and healthy growth. But unlike synthetic fertilizers that can overwhelm plants with a quick hit of nutrients, hair releases nitrogen slowly as it breaks down. That means plants get just the right amount over time—no fuss, no overfeeding.

  • It’s Packed with Micronutrients
Did you know hair contains sulfur, magnesium, and other trace elements? These are the unsung heroes of plant health, helping with everything from root development to stress resistance. It’s like giving your plants a multivitamin!

  • It’s a Natural Soil Booster
Here’s something I didn’t expect: as hair decomposes, it feeds the microbes in the soil. These tiny organisms work behind the scenes to unlock nutrients and keep the soil ecosystem thriving. Healthy microbes = healthy soil = happy plants.

  • It Helps with Moisture and Structure
Hair also helps the soil hold onto water, which is a game-changer for anyone who struggles to keep plants hydrated (I see you, busy plant parents). Plus, it improves soil texture, giving roots the space they need to grow strong and deep.

Hair brings together all these elements—nutrition, balance, and resilience—into one natural and effective solution. It’s a great reminder that sometimes the simplest things, like the hair we often overlook, can have a big impact.

So next time you're tending to your plants, just remember: there’s a whole world of hidden potential right in front of us. By thinking a little differently and working with nature, we can help our plants grow stronger, support the soil, and do something good for the planet—all starting with something as simple as hair.
